Biography
Space rock outfit Young Galaxy originated when Stephen Ramsay, who had previously toured as guitarist for Stars, teamed up with his partner Catherine McCandless. The pair launched the project in Vancouver before shifting their base to Montreal for living and recording. Arts & Crafts, the imprint tied to Stars, added them to its roster, resulting in an EP and a limited-edition 7" release. After assembling a full live configuration, the group joined the Dears for a run of dates in fall 2006. Their self-titled debut album surfaced in April 2007 and included contributions from the Dears, the Besnard Lakes, Stars, Patrick Watson, and A Silver Mt. Zion. The sophomore effort Invisible Republic arrived in 2009 through Fontana North. The following year Paper Bag Records issued the album domestically, securing a 2010 Polaris Music Prize nomination. Young Galaxy issued Shapeshifting in 2011, with production handled by Dan Lissvik of the Swedish band Studio. Two years after that came their fourth studio album, Ultramarine. In 2015 the band returned with Falsework, their fifth full-length and third project under Lissvik’s guidance, marked by its atmospheric and synthy textures.
