Biography
Cameron Mesirow operates under the name Glasser, delivering experimental electronic pop marked by arresting qualities where her sweeping vocals sit amid productions that merge futuristic textures with primal energy. Stark beats paired with looping melodies on the 2010 debut Ring drew equally from avant-garde sources and worldwide folk lineages, whereas cleanly formed electronics on 2013's Interiors offset intricate feelings with precision. Mesirow extended that juxtaposition to its fullest by converting discussions of sex into disquieting yet rhythmic pieces on the 2018 release Sextape, then carried forward some of that EP's raw openness into reflections on mortality and self that formed the 2023 album crux.
Los Angeles-born Mesirow encountered both mainstream and demanding sounds throughout childhood. Her father belongs to the Blue Man Group, and her mother performed with Human Sexual Response during the 1970s and 1980s. Early listening included Motown and new wave, supplemented by childhood piano instruction; adolescence introduced punk, grunge, and ska. While pursuing German and literature studies at San Francisco State University, songwriting began.
A vision of a shape suspended above water prompted the project name Glasser. Demos reached True Panther, which issued the Apply EP during May 2009. Young Turks handled the U.K. version along with the 2010 Tremel EP, compiling remixes of the Apply track by Jamie xx and Astronomer. Glasser supported tours alongside the xx and Sigur Rós' Jónsi using a changing lineup of musicians that included producers Van Rivers and the Subliminal Kid, both of whom contributed to the September 2010 debut Ring. Chosen for its fluid, balanced form, the album incorporated additional production from Ariel Rechtshaid and expanded the sonic palette through strings and woodwinds. Ring garnered praise for its rich, hypnotic atmosphere and attained number nine on Billboard's Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
Rivers rejoined Mesirow for the follow-up. Released in October 2013 via True Panther, Interiors drew from her relocation to New York and Rem Koolhaas' Delirious New York, yielding a sleeker, electronics-led version of the material. Another well-received effort, it reached position 15 on the Dance/Electronic Albums chart. Following that achievement, Mesirow stepped away from music for an extended period.
Glasser returned via the self-released 2018 EP Sextape, built from pulsing dance cuts derived from interviews with fellow queer individuals regarding early sexual encounters, and contributed to Roll the Dice's "Elevate." Four more years elapsed before "New Scars," an expansive, inward single composed amid the initial COVID-19 outbreak and aligned more closely with the approach of Ring and Interiors. Mesirow sustained that atmosphere across the third album, October 2023's crux. Issued on One Little Independent, it examined death, identity, and closeness through compositions blending Celtic and Eastern European elements alongside string arrangements.
