Biography
Operating under the Nite Jewel alias, Los Angeles musician and multimedia artist Ramona Gonzalez produces synth-driven works that filter 1980s R&B through experimental means. Her 2008 debut album Good Evening balanced lo-fi production values with an unusually abstract take on groove, helping establish the chillwave template that emerged soon after, yet Gonzalez advanced markedly on each subsequent release. She partnered with figures such as Dâm-Funk and Julia Holter while exploring pop, funk, and dance-inflected directions within her continually shifting sound, yielding both immediately approachable and luminous material on 2017's Real High and more structurally demanding pieces on 2021's No Sun.
Born in Oakland and raised in Berkeley by parents with strong musical interests, Gonzalez pursued philosophy studies at Occidental College. Music remained central during this period: she performed in multiple rock groups alongside her husband Cole M. Grief-Neill, who later joined Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, generated ambient synth works for sound-based installation pieces, and ultimately launched her solo project as Nite Jewel. Although Grief-Neill supplied production input and occasional co-writing while Emily Jane contributed live support, Gonzalez commits all recording to a portable eight-track cassette recorder, layering analog synths and drum machines before applying heavy processing to her vocals.
A self-released six-song CD-R titled My CD drew the attention of New York's Other Records, leading to the 2008 What Did He Say 12" and the full-length Good Evening on Human Ear Music. Her standing within indie circles rose in 2009 via the Want You Back 12" on Italians Do It Better, the self-released demo collection You F O, and two additional 7" singles. The year 2010 brought a Stones Throw single with Dâm-Funk plus the late-summer Gloriette EP Am I Real?. Gonzalez maintained a high output in 2011 through assorted 7" releases, the Mexican Summer EP It Goes Through Your Head, and joint efforts with sound artists Julia Holter and Jason Grier.
After issuing tracks across multiple imprints, she signed with Secretly Canadian and prepared her clearest recordings to that point, resulting in the polished full-length One Second of Love in March 2012. The next year she joined Bay Area rapper/producer Droop-E on "N the Traffic"; their partnership continued as the duo AMTHYST, which issued the Euphoria EP in 2016. Gonzalez also delivered her third Nite Jewel album Liquid Cool on Gloriette, underscoring the more autonomous and experimental dimension of her catalog. Later that year she reconvened with Dâm-Funk for the Nite-Funk EP and again for the following year's Real High, a pop-leaning album that incorporated input from Grief-Neill, Droop-E, and Julia Holter. The companion Italians Do It Better EP Obsession, containing alternate mixes and B-sides, appeared the same year.
Gonzalez entered a UCLA musicology PhD program in 2018, returning only in 2021 with No Sun. Cut after the conclusion of her twelve-year marriage, the album adopted a darker, moodier, and more experimental character than much of her prior Nite Jewel work.
