Geneva Jacuzzi, based in Los Angeles, creates surrealist lo-fi works that extend across recordings, music videos, installations, and singular performances built around distinctive characters. From her start in the early 2000s onward, her tripped-out synth pop contributed to the sound later labeled hypnagogic pop by decade’s end, although her approach remained more theatrical than most contemporaries, informed by sci-fi, pantomime, and the performance-art wing of new wave. Her initial proper album, Lamaze in 2010, assembled key tracks from assorted self-released CD-Rs, while Technophelia arrived in 2016 as a blend of studio and home recordings that stayed equally odd and inventive. Triple Fire, an album exploring darkwave and alternative dance, followed in 2024.

Throughout the 2000s Geneva Garvin performed in several groups, among them Obelisk and Vibe Central, yet Bubonic Plague drew the largest audience. Songs from the band’s self-issued CD-Rs later surfaced on her solo Geneva Jacuzzi releases, and additional material appeared on Human Ear Music, the Los Angeles label that also issued early recordings by Julia Holter and Nite Jewel. She supplied covers for Manimal Vinyl tribute albums to the Cure and Madonna, and her first vinyl outing, the Group Dynamic EP, came out on Big Love Records in 2009. Lamaze, a collection of cassette recordings made between 2004 and 2009, was issued by Vinyl International in 2010, while her track “The Sleep Room” appeared on the Stones Throw compilation Minimal Wave Tapes Volume Two in 2012.

Jacuzzi has toured with artists including John Maus and occasional collaborator Ariel Pink, and has presented installations, videos, and art performances at galleries, venues, and festivals across multiple continents. Her second album, Technophelia, was co-produced by Chris Coady and released by Medical Records in 2016. She issued two volumes of Secret Demos as tour-only CD-Rs and guested on releases by Spookey Ruben, Jorge Elbrecht, and Raw Thrills. In 2020 Mexican Summer included her 2010-recorded “Dark Streets” in the Looking Glass singles series and reissued Lamaze the following year; the label also released Human Head, an EP recorded in 2004. For Triple Fire, issued by Dais in 2024, Jacuzzi worked with Roderick Edens and Andrew Briggs.
