Biography
Emerging as a leading voice in the modernization of synth pop, Lust for Youth started out as the stark, homemade electronic endeavor of Swedish musician Hannes Norrvide, later expanding its lineup and refining its approach. The project's initial releases, beginning with 2011's Solar Flare, fused anguished darkwave textures, sparse electronics, and gothic rhythms that veered toward abrasive noise, though increased melodic focus and compositional clarity emerged by the arrival of 2013's Perfect View. This evolution reached fuller expression on the 2014 breakthrough International and the 2019 self-titled release, both featuring emotionally charged yet rhythm-driven tracks echoing the styles of Depeche Mode and New Order.
The group formed in 2009 within a shared Gothenburg, Sweden venue and rehearsal facility where Norrvide's acquaintances were forming a punk outfit. Drawn to participate yet limited to a toy keyboard, he instead pursued solo creation. Multiple cassette releases and assorted 7" singles preceded the 2011 debut proper, Solar Flare, issued by Italian imprint Avant! Records. Around this period Norrvide moved from Sweden to Copenhagen, Denmark, to join his girlfriend, who also appeared with the project in live settings. Following their separation, he enlisted friend Loke Rahbek, recognized for contributions to Vår along with endeavors such as Sexdrome and Croatian Armor plus his role as co-founder of Posh Isolation shop and label. The initial output credited to the duo arrived with 2012's dissonant Growing Seeds, simultaneously their introduction via U.S. outlet Sacred Bones. In 2013 the project issued two albums showcasing greater range: Pomegranate, presented as a Croatian Armor collaboration, adopted a spacious aesthetic approaching new age, whereas Perfect View foregrounded its underlying synth pop leanings.
Further refinement came through producer Malthe Fischer, encountered by Norrvide and Rahbek after he purchased a Vår album at the Posh Isolation location. His proposal to work in his studio led to sessions yielding the fourth album, International. Shaped by the romantic separations each of the three underwent during its creation, the record appeared in 2014 and earned widespread praise. The lineup reconvened in 2016 for Compassion, extending toward grander sonic scope. By 2019's self-titled effort the configuration had reduced to the pair of Norrvide and Fischer, who reaffirmed emphasis on the project's more luminous qualities.
