Marked by its androgynous visual style, haunting motifs, and somber synth pop, Drab Majesty revolves around Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Andrew Clinco, who performs under the alter ego Deb DeMure. Blending the sonic palette of early 4AD acts with goth and new wave textures, Clinco put out scattered independent recordings before joining the DAIS Records roster. Following 2015's Careless, he added collaborator Alex Nicolaou (aka Mona D) for later works such as the 2017 concept album The Demonstration, which explored mass suicide themes, and the dense, synth-heavy Modern Mirror in 2019. The project resurfaced in 2023 with the four-song mini-album An Object in Motion, which included a guest turn from Slowdive's Rachel Goswell.

Clinco grew up in a musical home during the early 2000s and absorbed the unconventional, era-defining sounds of Siouxsie and the Banshees, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, and Felt. Self-taught on his father's guitar, he joined his grandmother at church, where the choir's wide dynamic range and the building's natural reverb later shaped his theatrical vocal approach. His first national exposure arrived as drummer for the post-rock group Marriages and the neo-goth darkwave band Black Mare. Seeking a vehicle that merged visual art with sonic atmosphere, he conceived a character to channel his external influences, giving rise to Deb DeMure and the multifaceted realm of Drab Majesty. Fusing '80s-tinged new wave with chiming, echoing guitars and ghostly synth lines, the project issued the independent 2012 EP Unarian Dances in a limited edition of 100 cassettes; inspired by a 1950s UFO cult, the recording was later acquired and re-pressed by Lollipop Records.

Drab Majesty joined DAIS Records in 2015 and delivered its first full-length, Careless, that same year. Critically embraced, the album was expanded and reissued the following year as Completely Careless. Still operating largely as a solo endeavor, DeMure toured to support the release, sharing stages with Clan of Xymox, the Black Queen, and fellow DAIS artists King Dude and Youth Code. During this period Clinco began collaborating with keyboardist Alex Nicolaou (aka Mona D), turning Drab Majesty into a duo. Mona D's debut appearance came on the 2017 album The Demonstration, framed as a concept record centered on the mindset surrounding mass suicides and Heaven's Gate leader Marshall Applewhite. Later that year the band released the 7" single "Oak Wood" as a tribute to the late Cash Askew of Them Are Us Too, and continued touring across the U.S. and Europe into 2018. The next effort, 2019's Modern Mirror, refined the project's hallmark sound while emphasizing synthesizers, effects, and post-punk guitar textures.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 and 2021, Clinco pursued the side project VR Sex before returning to work with Nicolaou under the Drab Majesty banner. Rather than a full-length, the ensuing release was a four-song set positioned between an EP and mini-album. Issued in 2023 as An Object in Motion, it featured guest vocals from Slowdive's Rachel Goswell on the track "Vanity."
