TR/ST arises from Robert Alfons’s singular vision, weaving luminous synth-pop lines through abrasive industrial pulses to shape sweeping tracks saturated with yearning, desire, and desolation. Sinuous melodies and Alfons’s resonant, theatrical delivery anchor the project, which explored abyssal emotional terrain on its Juno Award-nominated 2012 debut, TRST. Brighter hues and overt dance elements surfaced on 2014’s Joyland, while 2019’s two-volume The Destroyer and the 2024 TR/ST EP restored equilibrium, each release extending the same wide-ranging electronic pop that consistently foregrounds empathy.

Alfons launched TR/ST in 2010 after encountering Maya Postepski, drummer for the kindred band Austra. Echoes of Depeche Mode and Joy Division surfaced immediately on the 2011 Sacred Bones singles “Candy Walls” and “Bulbform,” both of which later anchored the Arts & Crafts-issued debut album TRST that arrived in February 2012. Postepski departed shortly afterward to focus on Austra’s expanding schedule. Early in 2013 TRST earned a Juno nomination for Electronic Album of the Year alongside Purity Ring’s Shrines and Grimes’ Visions.

That same year Alfons began shaping TR/ST’s first fully solo album. Infused with house and acid-techno colors, Joyland entered the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart at number 12 upon its March 2014 release. After touring behind the record, Alfons paused to reassess his methods before resuming work in 2016, tracking in Los Angeles and at an old farmhouse outside Toronto with Postepski again serving as co-writer and producer. The 2017 singles “Bicep” and “Destroyer” previewed the project; the latter featured choreography by Ryan Heffington, known for Sia’s “Chandelier” video and the Netflix series The OA. April 2019 brought The Destroyer, Vol. 1 on House Arrest Records, which built upon Joyland’s palette, while the more inward Vol. 2, issued that November with additional production from Lars Stalfors, introduced threads of dream pop and ambient music.

After contributing to Jesse Draxler’s Reigning Cement and remixing Taali’s “Hear You Now” in 2020, TR/ST resurfaced in 2022 with “The Shore,” a June collaboration credited to Nightfeelings (Teengirl Fantasy’s Nick Weiss), followed by October’s “Razr,” written for the audio thriller Impact Winter. Late in 2023 the artist joined Dais Records and released the single “Robrash,” again co-produced with Nightfeelings. The track anchored the February 2024 TR/ST EP, which also enlisted Nick Launay and Cecile Believe and included a cover of the Pet Shop Boys’ “Being Boring” featuring Jake Shears.
