Denmark's Iceage originated in 2008 as a quartet of abrasive punk rockers whose members had known one another for years. Singer-guitarist Elias Bender Rønnenfelt, guitarist Johan Suurballe Wieth, bassist Jakob Tvilling Pless, and drummer Dan Kjær Nielsen were all roughly seventeen years old when they began recording. Their 2009 self-titled EP preceded a 2011 alliance with Tambourhinoceros Records that produced the debut album New Brigade, whose chilly, Joy Division-informed attack reached the United States by mid-year and prompted the band's first American appearance in Brooklyn.

The 2013 follow-up You're Nothing retained a measure of brutality while revealing greater sophistication, earning the group a contract with Matador Records. On their third album, 2014's Plowing into the Field of Love, also issued by Matador, the arrangements incorporated horns, keyboards, and acoustic guitars, allowing the songs to become more dynamic and eclectic while preserving the ensemble's darker character. That trajectory continued with 2018's Beyondless, an effort additionally shaped by Rønnenfelt's concurrent work with his side project Marching Church, which released two albums during the interval between Iceage LPs.

The band's fifth long-player, Seek Shelter, appeared in May 2021 and marked its first use of outside production, supplied by Spacemen 3's Sonic Boom. The following year Iceage issued Shake the Feeling: Outtakes & Rarities 2015-2021, gathering material recorded across several phases of the group's history yet previously left uncollected.
