Biography
The Depreciation Guild fused synth-swathed dream pop with reverb-drenched sensibilities—drawing clear parallels to the Field Mice and the Jesus and Mary Chain—while incorporating chiptunes-style instrumentation via a modified 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System. In 2005 Kurt Feldman, later a member of the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, joined twin brothers Christoph (also a core member of the Pains) and Anton Hochheim to establish the group. Its inaugural release, Nautilus, appeared on 8 Bit Peoples in 2006. The following year the band issued its self-released debut album In Her Gentle Jaws, which stirred considerable interest among indie pop listeners partly because the entire record could be downloaded at no cost from the band’s site. The Depreciation Guild stayed largely silent on the release front for the subsequent two years. During that interval Feldman and Christoph focused on the Pains, whose critical and fan acclaim was then on the rise. In 2009 the Depreciation Guild placed the 7" single “Dream About Me” with Kanine Records, which soon afterward issued a remastered vinyl edition of In Her Gentle Jaws.
