Biography
The Brooklyn indie pop trio Au Revoir Simone unites Heather D'Angelo on vocals, drum machine, and keyboard with Erika Forster and Annie Hart, both handling vocals and keyboard. The group took its name from a supporting character in Tim Burton's Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, forming as a Casio-driven ensemble in late 2003 after Forster and Hart first connected on a train ride from Vermont to New York. Their immediate rapport led to collaborative songwriting, after which D'Angelo and Sung Bin Park, who contributed keyboard and vocals, joined following repeated rehearsal appearances; Park departed in January 2005 to explore other work.
One year afterward, the remaining members issued their debut album, Verses of Comfort, Assurance & Salvation, handling self-release duties domestically while Moshi Moshi distributed the record across Europe. Inclusion of the track "Through the Backyards" in the season finale of Grey's Anatomy that spring helped raise the group's visibility. Their follow-up, The Bird of Music, arrived the next year, with a complete track-by-track remix version surfacing in 2008 as Reverse Migration.
Thom Monahan produced the third album, Still Night, Still Light, which Our Secret Record Company released in spring 2009. Following an extended hiatus during which the members each explored separate musical directions, the trio reconvened to record and issue a fourth album in late 2013. Co-produced by the band alongside Jorge Elbrecht of Violens, Move in Spectrums appeared on the reactivated Instant Records imprint founded by longtime producer Richard Gottehrer.
