Biography
Camille Thurman brings a soulful presence to her work as a saxophonist, flutist, and vocalist, delivering a warm tone across both acoustic jazz standards and contemporary material shaped by R&B. Born in Queens, New York, she started performing music early and refined her technique during studies at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and the Performing Arts. After graduation she completed a degree in Geological & Environmental Science at Binghamton University, then came back to New York City to focus on her musical path. Public notice arrived in 2013 when she finished third in the Sarah Vaughan Vocal Competition. That year also saw the release of her first album, Spirit Child, issued by Hot Tone Music. Origins followed in 2014. As a sought-after artist she has appeared alongside Chaka Khan, Benny Golson, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Alicia Keys, Nicholas Payton, Russell Malone, and numerous additional figures. Thurman received the 2015 Martin E. Segal Award, given to Young Outstanding Artists, and earned the ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award on two occasions. Her first recording for Chesky Records, Inside the Moment, appeared in 2017 and featured bass veteran Cecil McBee, guitarist Jack Wilkins, drummer Steve Williams, and trumpeter Jeremy Pelt. The next year she issued her second Chesky album, Waiting for the Sunrise, which presented a set of jazz standards.
