Biography
An accomplished jazz drummer whose skills have made him a sought-after collaborator as well as an independent bandleader, Johnathan Blake emerged in the 2000s on the East Coast after absorbing the Philadelphia jazz lineage of Mickey Roker and Philly Joe Jones. Although best recognized for his acoustic post-bop contributions alongside the Mingus Big Band and such established figures as Tom Harrell and Kenny Barron, he has moved fluidly into more exploratory territory, appearing on projects led by Jaleel Shaw, Omer Avital, and Questlove. As a composer he has issued distinctive recordings under his own name, among them The Eleventh Hour in 2012 and Trion in 2019. His first Blue Note album, Homeward Bound, arrived in 2021 and was followed by Passage two years later.
Born in Philadelphia in 1976 to jazz violinist John Blake, Jr., he grew up surrounded by music and began drumming at ten. During his teenage years he performed with the Lovett Hines Youth Ensemble, began writing original pieces, and joined saxophonist Robert Landham’s youth jazz group at Settlement Music School, where he encountered Jaleel Shaw, Christian McBride, and Joey DeFrancesco. Evening hours found him sitting in at Philadelphia clubs alongside Shirley Scott and Mickey Roker. After George Washington High School he enrolled in the jazz program at William Paterson University, studying with Rufus Reid, John Riley, Steve Wilson, and Horace Arnold. An ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award came in 2006; the following year he completed a master’s degree at Rutgers University, concentrating on composition under Ralph Bowen, Conrad Herwig, and Stanley Cowell.
While still a student he secured professional engagements with the Oliver Lake Big Band, Roy Hargrove, Russell Malone, and David Sanchez. As a member of the Mingus Big Band he contributed to the Grammy-nominated albums Tonight at Noon (2002) and I Am Three (2005). Additional associations with Randy Brecker, Joe Locke, and Ronnie Cuber further established his reputation. He has remained a core member of Tom Harrell’s ensembles, appearing on Light On (2007), Prana Dance (2009), and Time of the Sun (2011).
Blake’s first outing as leader, The Eleventh Hour, was released in 2012 and featured Harrell, Robert Glasper, Jaleel Shaw, and Ben Street. Further recordings with Harrell followed, including Colors of a Dream (2013), First Impressions (2015), and Some Gold, Something Blue (2016). He also participated in Dr. Lonnie Smith’s Evolution (2016), Kenny Barron’s Grammy-nominated Book of Intuition (2016), and the pianist’s 2018 octet album Concentric Circles. Trion, issued in 2018, showcased Chris Potter and Linda May Han Oh. Additional sessions that year included All in My Mind with Dr. Lonnie Smith and Leap of Faith with Eric Alexander. In March 2020 he joined Barron and Dave Holland for Without Deception; later the same year he recorded Oded Tzur’s Here Be Dragons.
At the close of 2020 Blake signed with Blue Note Records and delivered Homeward Bound the next year, supported by Immanuel Wilkins, David Virelles, Joel Ross, and Dezron Douglas—collectively known as Pentad. After extensive touring across the United States, Europe, and Asia in 2022, the same ensemble reconvened for Passage, released in August 2023. The album, dedicated to his father John Blake, Jr., takes its title from one of the violinist’s compositions and contains five originals by Blake along with works by Dezron Douglas, David Virelles, and the late Ralph Peterson, Jr.
