Born in Malta and raised across Arabia, Brunei, and England, Capitol K—real name Kristian Craig Robinson—draws on his encounters with diverse musical cultures to fuse lo-fi rock, electronica, and pop into a singular sound. His early listening encompassed Chinese pop and the marching band traditions of the United Arab Emirates, later intersecting with punk, new wave, grunge, and Japanese noise-core to yield an unexpected hybrid. Drawn by London’s creative environment and the scope it offered for artistic exploration, Robinson established himself there, crafting four-track sound collages that he circulated throughout the city; one such recording reached Mike Paradinas of Planet Mu. These studio experiments culminated in his first release, Sounds of the Empire, a predominantly electronic work balancing samples with live instrumentation that earned strong critical notice and positioned Capitol K prominently within the U.K. electronic landscape. The 2002 follow-up, Island Row, drew from Robinson’s personal history by conceptually evoking figures and locations from earlier years, incorporating childhood field recordings into its layered constructions. Performing alongside Leafcutter John, he has developed a following for dynamic live sets that reconstruct the expansive textures of his recordings through combined live and sampled elements.
