CJ Camerieri, a multi-instrumentalist, horn arranger, and trumpeter with yMusic, issues music under the solo alias CARM. The project’s introspective, atmospheric pieces center on acoustic sources, notably brass, though programmed beats, electronics, samples, and conventional rock instrumentation sometimes enter the arrangements. Justin Vernon appeared among the featured vocalists on the 2021 debut album CARM by the longtime Bon Iver associate.

Born Carmen Jonathan Camerieri in New Jersey, the artist known as CJ Camerieri had already recorded with Sufjan Stevens, the National, and Rufus Wainwright by the mid- to late 2000s. In 2008 he helped establish the chamber sextet yMusic, a group that later issued its own instrumental albums and forged numerous partnerships across the indie landscape. Throughout the following decade, while remaining active with yMusic, Camerieri played on Bon Iver’s Grammy-winning self-titled album (2011), Paul Simon’s Stranger to Stranger (2016), and Taylor Swift’s Evermore (2020).

Camerieri issued his first solo outing under the CARM moniker in 2021. The self-titled collection, co-produced by Camerieri and Ryan Olson, appeared on the 37d03d label that January. Blending diverse indie instrumentals with a handful of vocal tracks, the set featured contributions from Justin Vernon, Sufjan Stevens, and Mouse on Mars.
