Biography
James Blake, active as a producer, vocalist, and songwriter, first drew notice for an approach that layered vulnerable, understated R&B singing over the weighty low frequencies and stripped-down grooves of dubstep. Multiple 12-inch singles marked his entry in 2009, yet it was the self-titled album released in 2011 that secured both broad critical favor and global recognition. His visibility grew steadily in the years that followed through work with prominent figures such as Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, and Bon Iver. The 2013 release Overgrown brought him the Mercury Prize. Worldwide commercial traction arrived during the middle of the decade, as 2016’s The Colour in Anything and 2019’s Assume Form both reached elevated chart positions while earning further praise. In 2021 he delivered his fifth studio album, Friends That Break Your Heart, which featured SZA, JID, SwaVay, and Monica Martin. With 2023’s Grammy-nominated Playing Robots Into Heaven he returned to the club-rooted textures of his earliest recordings, then joined Lil Yachty the next year for the joint project Bad Cameo.
Born James Blake Litherland in London in 1988, he grew up surrounded by music. Classical piano instruction began early and continued through his schooling. While still in his teens he and his circle immersed themselves in electronic sounds, particularly the London-centered dubstep movement that emerged in the mid-2000s. Early U.K. practitioners including Burial, Distance, and Skream shaped his direction, which he fused with the atmospheric R&B sensibilities of artists like D’Angelo as he crafted his initial material. That fusion surfaced first on the 2009 Hemlock 12-inch Air & Lack Thereof. The track gained further exposure when Soul Jazz included it on the Steppas’ Delight 2 compilation later the same year.
Throughout 2010, a pivotal period for him, Blake issued a steady stream of well-received 12-inches on various labels: The Bells Sketch on Hessle Audio in March, CMYK on R&S in June, Klavierwerke on R&S in October, and the one-sided Limit to Your Love on Atlas in November. The final release, a cover of Feist’s song that foregrounded his expressive voice, previewed the full-length that followed in February. Titled James Blake, the album created a strong impact and received a Mercury Prize nomination, though PJ Harvey’s Let England Shake ultimately claimed the award.
He next returned to Hemlock for the Order 12-inch before moving back to Atlas for the six-track EP Enough Thunder, which contained a Bon Iver feature and a reading of Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You.” Love What Happened Here, another 12-inch, closed out 2011. Much of 2012 was devoted to recording his second album, issuing material under the Harmonimix alias, and reducing live appearances while the new songs took shape. Overgrown arrived in April 2013 with contributions from Brian Eno and RZA; it captured that year’s Mercury Prize, and the track “Retrograde” earned Blake an Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song.
Following a collaboration with Airhead and an EP on his own 1-800 Dinosaur imprint, Blake remained largely quiet for three years. He reappeared in April 2016 with guest spots on Beyoncé’s Lemonade. The Colour in Anything followed weeks later with minimal warning. Recorded partly in England and at Rick Rubin’s Malibu facility, the album incorporated work from Bon Iver and Frank Ocean, reached the upper half of the Billboard 200, and topped the U.S. Dance/Electronic chart. Additional 2016 appearances included Frank Ocean’s Endless, Vince Staples’ Prima Donna, and Travis Scott’s Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight. In 2017 he surfaced on Jay-Z’s 4:44 and Mount Kimbie’s Love What Survives, and he produced “Element” for Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN.
During 2018 Blake co-wrote and performed on two tracks for the Black Panther soundtrack—“King’s Dead” with Kendrick Lamar, Future, and Jay Rock, and “Bloody Waters,” also co-written by Lamar. “King’s Dead” later received the 2019 Grammy for Best Rap Performance, marking Blake’s first win after earlier nominations. Singles appeared across the year, beginning with “If the Car Beside You Moves Ahead” in January and “Don’t Miss It” in May. His production and vocals also featured on albums by Oneohtrix Point Never and Travis Scott. Assume Form, his fourth album, arrived in January 2019 with guest contributions from Metro Boomin, Andre 3000, and Travis Scott, earning another Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album.
The EP Before surfaced the following year, followed later that winter by the Covers EP. Early 2021 brought the single “Say What You Will” ahead of Friends That Break Your Heart. “(Pick Me Up) Euphoria,” a Labrinth collaboration created for the second season of the HBO series Euphoria, appeared in 2022, as did the AI-assisted ambient album Wind Down, intended as an aid for sleep. Two Metro Boomin collaborations, “Hummingbird” and “Nonviolent Communication,” featured on the soundtrack to the 2023 film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The dancehall-leaning “Big Hammer” preceded Playing Robots Into Heaven, released in September and signaling a return to the bass-music contexts of his early Hemlock and Hessle Audio releases. Both the album and the single “Loading” received Grammy nominations for Best Dance/Electronic Album and Best Dance/Electronic Recording.
In 2024 Blake partnered with Lil Yachty on the collaborative album Bad Cameo, merging his lightest textural electronics with Yachty’s most melodic Auto-Tuned vocal style.
