Biography
Dawn Richard ranks among the most forward-thinking and versatile figures in present-day music through her navigation of contemporary R&B, experimental pop, EDM, and minimalist luminous ballads that resist easy labels. She progressed from her roles in Danity Kane and Diddy-Dirty Money to issue multiple conceptual albums that span and extend beyond those territories. Her catalog includes the Top Ten R&B/hip-hop album Goldenheart (2013), the Top Five dance/electronic releases Blackheart (2015) and Redemption (2016), plus Pigments (2022) and Quiet in a World Full of Noise (2024), the last two created in partnership with multi-instrumentalist and fellow producer Spencer Zahn. Richard sidesteps genre boundaries to deliver emotionally charged and often exhilarating outcomes while linking past and future through her Louisiana Creole and Haitian roots via an inventive approach. Beyond studio and live work, Richard also performs as an actor and animator.
Dawn Angeliqué Richard entered the world and grew up in New Orleans. Coming from an artistic household, she is the daughter of Chocolate Milk’s Frank Richard and devoted much of her childhood to her mother’s dance school. Prior to gaining widespread attention, she issued material under the name Dawn Angeliqué, launching in 2005 with the independently released Been a While, a contemporary R&B collection recorded while she attended the University of New Orleans and served as an NBA cheerleader. In that period, Richard first appeared on Making the Band 3. The third season of the reality program formed Danity Kane, whose two Billboard 200 number-one albums, Danity Kane and Welcome to the Dollhouse, preceded the group’s 2009 disbandment. Richard next joined vocalist Kalenna Harper in Diddy-Dirty Money, a brief ensemble that delivered the album Last Train to Paris and the mixtape Love Love vs. Hate Love before concluding in 2012.
Richard restarted her solo path, which continued across repeated Danity Kane separations and reunions. Alongside mixtapes, EPs, and a third Danity Kane full-length, she issued a trilogy of solo albums between 2013 and 2016, opening with Goldenheart, which reached the Billboard 200 and peaked at number ten on the R&B/hip-hop chart. The trilogy’s second installment, Blackheart, pushed her sound further outward two years later and nearly reached the summit of the Dance/Electronic chart. Redemption finished the series in 2016 and marked her second Top Five Dance/Electronic placement.
Following her contribution of lyrics and vocals to a track on multi-instrumentalist and composer Spencer Zahn’s People of the Dawn LP in 2018, Richard opened a fresh solo phase in 2019 with New Breed, an album closely tied to her hometown and her father. She followed in 2021 with Second Line, her debut for Merge Records, which incorporated excerpts of conversations with her mother. The next year she reunited with Zahn on Pigments, a reflective full-length that merges neo-classical, atmospheric jazz, and ambient electronic music through strings, woodwinds, and sampled components. The 2023 EP The Architect veered sharply in another direction with three daring avant-pop pieces, most prominently the assertive “Bubblegum.”
Richard again joined Zahn for Quiet in a World Full of Noise, released in September 2024. The pieces originated with Zahn at the piano, and several gained further depth from strings, brass musicians, and the Budapest Film Orchestra. Zahn processed grief tied to his father’s illness and the sudden loss of a cousin, aiming to offer comfort to listeners.
