Jamila Woods fuses incisive, forceful verses with a gentle, tuneful delivery, shaping modern R&B rooted in soul that reaches wide audiences yet steers clear of mainstream concessions. Deeply embedded in Chicago’s creative circles, the vocalist and composer—who also works as an activist and prize-winning poet—lifted her musical visibility through partnerships with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Chance the Rapper. Her first full-length release, HEAVN (2016), ranged from the uplifting force of “Blk Girl Soldier” to the tender romance of the title track. The galvanizing follow-up LEGACY! LEGACY! (2019) centered creators and writers of color through threads of personal and ancestral experience. On her third album, Water Made Us (2023), Woods traced the course and residue of a romantic relationship by blending buoyant alt-pop, atmospheric R&B, and fluid funk.

Born and raised in Chicago, Woods began singing in church. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in Africana Studies and Theatre Arts & Performance Studies from Brown University, she returned home and formed the self-described “adventure soul” duo Milo & Otis, also known as M&O. The pair issued The Joy (2012) and Almost Us (2014), the former featuring Chance the Rapper. Woods and Chance later reunited on “Sunday Candy,” a standout from Donnie Trumpet & the Social Experiment’s Surf (2015). Early the next year she signed with Chicago’s Closed Sessions as a solo artist and released her debut single, “Blk Girl Soldier.” Around the same period Macklemore & Ryan Lewis released “White Privilege II,” on which Woods supplied the closing lines. Soon afterward she appeared on “Blessings,” the finale of Chance’s Grammy-winning Coloring Book.

HEAVN, Woods’ eagerly awaited debut, surfaced digitally on Closed Sessions in July 2016. Marked by deep conviction and insight without preachiness, the record conveyed the authority of a seasoned artist at full stride. The following year an expanded edition issued by Jagjaguwar on multiple formats broadened its reach. Drawing continued inspiration from her role as associate artistic director of the nonprofit Young Chicago Authors, Woods released her second solo album, LEGACY! LEGACY!, through Jagjaguwar in May 2019. Each song took its title from and drew influence from a writer or artist of color, spanning Nikki Giovanni to Muddy Waters.

A series of singles and featured appearances followed in subsequent years. Woods’ own releases included the 2020 track “Sula” (issued in relaxed “paperback” and more robust “hardcover” versions), a 2021 imaginative cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car,” and the 2022 BLVK-produced “Boundaries,” on which she embraced a textured acoustic sound. Collaborations during this stretch encompassed Bonobo’s “Tides” and Adi Oasis’ “Red to Violet.” Meanwhile she advanced her third album by writing prolifically, first working remotely with Chris McClenney before joining the producer at his Los Angeles studio to finalize Water Made Us. The album arrived in October 2023 and, though Woods’ most inward-looking work to date, remained a collective effort featuring Duendita, Saba, and Peter CottonTale.
