Kadhja Bonet, whose voice floats with an enchanting airiness across a seamless fusion of cosmic jazz, R&B, folk, and classical elements, first generated quiet momentum inside the Los Angeles underground. That foundation preceded her 2016 mini-album The Visitor and the widely praised full-length Childqueen, which arrived in 2018. Those projects in turn opened doors to high-profile partnerships with Childish Gambino and Anderson.Paak, culminating in the 2022 release of her JGS EP.

A multi-instrumentalist whose classical violin studies began in childhood, Bonet turned seriously toward music only after an unsatisfying stretch in film school. Early sessions with Los Angeles producer Itai Shapira produced the soulful single “Tears for Lamont” in 2014. Later that year she joined the Red Bull Music Academy in Tokyo, where she worked with German producer RJ and Australian producer Max Maxwell on the electronic-infused track “Late Night Munchies.” Throughout the first half of 2015 she continued issuing singles online, each one stretching her palette while sharpening an elegant, at times cinematic aesthetic. September of that year brought her first proper collection, the mini-album The Visitor, issued jointly through Fresh Selects and Fat Possum.

Childqueen followed in 2018 as a still more immersive and mystical full-length on which Bonet supplied most of the instrumentation herself. The album earned strong critical favor, widening her audience and sparking further collaborations with Childish Gambino, Anderson.Paak, SiR, and Free Nationals. She eventually returned to solo work with the vibrant JGS EP, released in 2022 on the Ninja Tune label.
