Biography
Carmen McRae possessed a distinctive smoky timbre from the start, yet it was her supple timing that lingered just behind the beat, paired with a wry way of delivering song lyrics, that set her apart most vividly. She took up piano as a child and secured her first notable engagement as a vocalist with Benny Carter’s big band in 1944, though another ten years passed before her professional path truly accelerated. During the 1940s she married and later divorced drummer Kenny Clarke, spent a short period with Count Basie, worked for Mercer Ellington between 1946 and 1947, and filled intermission slots as both singer and pianist across various New York nightspots.
By 1954 she had begun leading her own recording sessions, having already folded the stylistic lessons of Billie Holiday and bebop into her personal approach. Steady studio work continued almost without interruption until 1989; while her upper register remained brighter during the 1950s and her phrasing grew even more relaxed in subsequent decades, her fundamental manner of expression stayed remarkably consistent. Critic Ralph Gleason became an early advocate in the 1950s, helping sustain her popularity over the ensuing years.
Standout projects included her contribution to Dave Brubeck’s The Real Ambassadors alongside Louis Armstrong, an album of live duets recorded with Betty Carter, collaborations with both Brubeck and George Shearing as accompanists, and a final pair of incisive tribute recordings devoted to Thelonious Monk and Sarah Vaughan. Between 1971 and 1990 she earned seven Grammy nominations. A lifelong smoker who declined to stop, McRae retired in 1991 after developing emphysema. Across her career she appeared on Bethlehem, Decca from 1954 to 1958, Kapp, Columbia, Mainstream, Focus, Atlantic between 1967 and 1970, Black Lion, Groove Merchant, Catalyst, Blue Note, Buddah, Concord, and Novus.
