Cassettes Won't Listen

Though sometimes presented as a quartet featuring the fabricated Kid Lucci on vocals along with Jeh Walker on bass, Drehke handling keys and programming, and Doc Torchaos behind the drums, Cassettes Won't Listen actually amounts to the solo endeavor of multi-instrumentalist and producer Jason Drake. Serving as director of marketing for the underground hip-hop powerhouse Def Jux while also co-founding Dope Lotus Records, Drake issued his first release, the digital-only electronica-tinged indie-rock EP Nobody's Moving, in 2005. That effort was soon succeeded by Quiet Trial, which earned him a spot in Urb Magazine's 2007 Next 100 list. He also supplied remixes for Dr. Octagon, Midlake, Mr. Lif, and Morcheeba, yet his initial physical EP, Small-Time Machine, did not appear until 2008, by which time the project had become solely Drake's own.
