Biography
Charles Trenet represented one of the final figures in a lineage of performers rooted in the pre-World War II French tradition, sharing affinities with the peak period of Maurice Chevalier and with songwriters such as Georges Brassens and Léo Ferré. Having begun as an art student, he shifted toward vocal performance during his early twenties, first appearing alongside pianist Johnny Hess in the act billed as "Charles and Johnny." In those initial appearances he also cultivated a reputation as a musical impressionist, specializing in heightened parodies of Chevalier. Despite the exuberant energy of those routines, he contended with intense stage fright that persisted throughout his life, though he eventually developed ways to conceal it from audiences. Following a year alongside Hess, he entered military service in the French Air Force, where he adopted a shaved head and monocle that produced an eccentric look and earned him the temporary label "The Singing Madman." He returned to civilian life and performing in 1936, during the brief interval of social and economic change that ended with the Popular Front government under Leon Blum. By then he had moved beyond the Chevalier caricatures and was recognized instead for a smooth, light baritone whose easygoing manner captivated music-hall crowds. During one celebrated 1938 appearance he was booked to deliver three numbers in the opening segment yet was summoned back repeatedly until he had performed twelve songs, preventing the headliner from taking the stage at all.
Trenet wrote his own material and achieved an early major success in 1939 with "Boum," an effervescent melody that quickly seized the attention of French listeners. In the years after World War II his work reached wider international audiences through translated versions, most often rendered with English lyrics by Lee Wilson. The most prominent of these was "La Mer," which Bobby Darin transformed into the English-language hit "Beyond the Sea." Additional successes encompassed "Le Soleil a Des Rayons de Pluie," "Il Y Avait Des Abres," "Printemps a Rio," "Bonsoir Jolie Madame," and "Que Reste-Il De Nos Amours," the last of which became better known in English as "I Wish You Love."
Even Trenet himself found his extended career span unexpected; he had planned to withdraw from performing during the 1970s and had already completed a farewell tour of France when a request for a final concert in Canada proved so warmly received that he continued working well into the 1990s. In that decade at least four CDs of his recordings appeared, among them a retrospective compiled by British reissue specialist Tony Watts. Across six decades he produced roughly 850 songs together with volumes of poetry and several novels, yet he typically spoke of this output with a wry, understated humor. Well into his eighties he maintained an animated presence, his broad smile framed by thinning red hair that reinforced the image of the classic music-hall veteran he remained. He continued composing prolifically through the late 1990s, often drawing ideas from reflections that surfaced while he worked on fiction, a habit that repeatedly delayed completion of his literary projects.
