Biography
Sacha Distel ranked among France’s foremost jazz guitarists and chanson singers. A highly productive recording artist, he laid down more than 200 songs, among them his signature success “Scoubidou,” released in 1958. He also appeared in several French films and became one of the nation’s most recognized television performers.
Music formed an early part of his life through his mother, a pianist, and his uncle Ray Ventura, a celebrated bandleader and composer. Henry Salvador, guitarist and singer in Ventura’s orchestra, oversaw his training, and by age 13 Distel already served as featured soloist in his school orchestra. He first attracted attention as accompanist to French vocalist Juliette Gréco.
Following military service in France, he lived for an extended period in New York, regularly visiting jazz clubs across Manhattan and Harlem. Once back in France he embarked on a solo career.
Although the 1960s and 1970s brought substantial success, the 1980s introduced repeated setbacks. A mid-1980s car crash that seriously injured a colleague left him psychologically shaken; shortly afterward he received a cancer diagnosis and began chemotherapy.
His compositions have been recorded by numerous international artists, among them Archie Shepp, Tony Bennett, Bobby Darin, Billy Eckstine, Bobby Hackett, Shirley Horn, and Bireli Lagrene. Distel died in 2004 at the age of 71.
