Eddy Mitchell, a figure of notable renown across France, launched his professional path near the end of the 1950s as a member of the rock and roll outfit Les Chaussettes Noires, also known as the Black Socks. After scoring a handful of successes alongside the band in the opening years of the 1960s, he stepped out on his own and, through the decades that followed, wove multiple strands of American music into his repertoire. Soul came under his scrutiny during the sixties and country-rock during the seventies, before he matured into a wide-ranging big-band showman by the eighties; that shift gave him room both to reinterpret earlier work and to push outward with fresh material. In that same decade Mitchell earned parallel acclaim as an actor and radio host, yet he kept these commitments in careful proportion to his singing and sustained new releases through the 2000s and 2010s.
