Charlie Wilson delivered the commanding lead vocals for funk legends the Gap Band, steering the ensemble through 15 Top Ten R&B singles, four of which climbed all the way to number one: “Burn Rubber (Why You Wanna Hurt Me),” “Early in the Morning,” “Outstanding,” and “All of My Love.” Based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the group remained active for more than four decades yet achieved their greatest commercial success in the late ’70s and early ’80s, when four albums earned gold or platinum certification in the United States. Their influence proved enduring, surfacing in Guy’s note-for-note reading of “Yearning for Your Love” and in Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk,” which listed the Gap Band among its co-writers; rap and R&B producers also mined the catalog extensively, as evidenced by Nas’ “Life’s a Bitch,” Soul for Real’s “Every Little Thing I Do,” Ashanti’s “Happy,” and dozens of additional tracks.

While still recording with the Gap Band, Wilson issued solo projects only occasionally. Following the 1992 release You Turn My Life Around and the 2000 set Bridging the Gap, which carried support from Snoop Dogg, he emerged as a prominent concert attraction in his own right and a consistent presence on urban adult contemporary radio, fueled by a run of Sony-distributed albums that began in the mid-2000s. Although those projects leaned heavily toward warm ballads, each contained at least one funk-driven number. Charlie, Last Name Wilson (2005) inaugurated a series of solo Top Ten R&B albums; its successor, Uncle Charlie (2009), peaked at number two on that chart and earned Grammy nominations for both the album and the single “There Goes My Baby.” Just Charlie (2010) entered the pop Top 20, with “You Are” collecting two Grammy nominations. Love, Charlie (2013) and Forever Charlie (2015) extended Wilson’s streak of Top Ten R&B albums and Grammy nods while he maintained his status as a large-scale arena performer. In It to Win It (2017) arrived alongside a tour that featured supporting appearances by Fantasia and Johnny Gill.
