Born in Harlem, R&B singer and songwriter Keith Sweat built his reputation around a signature whining vocal delivery. Before securing a major-label deal he handled production duties on 1984 and 1985 singles for GQ and Roberta Gilliam while releasing his own independent tracks “Lucky Seven” and “My Mind Is Made Up.” His first album for Elektra, Make It Last Forever, finally appeared in November 1987. The project moved more than three million copies and yielded the hits “I Want Her” (number one R&B, number five pop), “Something Just Ain’t Right” (number three R&B), “Make It Last Forever” (number two R&B), and “Don’t Stop Your Love” (number nine R&B).

In 1990 he followed with the million-selling I’ll Give All My Love to You, which contained “Make You Sweat” (number one R&B, number 14 pop), “Merry Go Round” (number two R&B), “I’ll Give All My Love to You” (number one R&B, number seven pop), and “Your Love, Pt. 2” (number four R&B). His third set, the late-1991 R&B chart-topper Keep It Comin’, added yet another number-one R&B single in its title track.

Although his mainstream visibility softened through the remainder of the 1990s, Sweat stayed a dominant R&B presence via Get Up on It (1994), Keith Sweat (1996), and Still in the Game (1998). The first of two LSG collaborations with Gerald LeVert and Johnny Gill also performed strongly, and he produced notable ’90s acts including Silk, Kut Klose, and Dru Hill. The next decade opened with Didn’t See Me Coming (2000) and Rebirth (2002), his last Elektra releases. He then moved to Atco for Just Me, an R&B number-one album in 2008, and to Kedar for Ridin’ Solo (2010). ’Til the Morning (2011) became the inaugural title on his own KDS label.

Sweat later starred in the Centric reality series Keith Sweat’s Platinum House, overseeing a stormy Dru Hill reunion. Dress to Impress (2016) brought that group and Silk aboard as guests. At the time of its release his long-running syndicated radio program The Sweat Hotel, devoted to R&B from the 1970s forward, approached its tenth anniversary. In 2018, with a dozen albums already to his credit, Sweat issued Playing for Keeps featuring K-Ci, Akon, Teddy Riley, and Tank.
