In late 1992, the urban contemporary quartet Shai climbed to the summit of both the R&B and pop rankings on the strength of their first album, ...If I Ever Fall in Love, and the chart-topping single that shared its name. Though their song choices sometimes fall short, the velvety smoothness of the group’s vocals generally renders those shortcomings negligible; Shai has continued to register strongly on R&B listings without replicating the mainstream impact of that initial hit.
