Biography

The assassination of Algerian vocalist Cheb Hasni, born Hasni Chakroun, at the hands of a national terrorist unit left a lasting mark on rai, the country’s signature dance music. Algerian writer Aziz Chouki observed that “(Hasni’s) murder changed the texts. It transformed the rai scene into a protest movement.” Throughout the civil war that engulfed the Middle Eastern nation, Algeria’s military regime viewed Hasni’s calls for open declarations of love as a threat; the national censorship board had already outlawed his recordings. Born in the northeastern Oran village of Gambetta, Hasni once aspired to professional soccer stardom and abandoned his studies to join Oran’s team. When that goal proved unattainable, he began performing at weddings and festivals alongside the group Si Kada Nui. The Naoui brothers discovered him at one such event and offered him regular engagements at their cabaret, Guingette. His 1987 summer duet with Cheba Zahounia, “Baraka,” quickly became a major hit, followed by further successes such as “You Are the Healer,” “You Ask for Separation,” “My Suffering Was Long,” and “May God Help Me.” Despite ongoing friction with Algerian authorities, Hasni attained widespread commercial triumph; his debut album, Madenitch Net Ferkou, moved nearly a million copies in Paris and its suburbs. Often called “the Julio Iglesias of Rai,” he is recalled for his ultra-light voice, sentimental lyrics, and preference for lush, orchestrated arrangements. Returning from a recording session, he was fatally shot twice by an assailant he mistook for an admirer.
