Biography
Chi Coltrane appeared poised for an enduring career when her debut single “Thunder and Lightning” entered the US top 20 during 1972. Everything about the timing and her abilities seemed aligned: an accomplished pianist with prodigious technique, a gifted songwriter, an expressive singer, and an engaging presence on camera. Her sound—an elegantly polished blend reminiscent of Carole King and Elton John—matched the prevailing taste of the era. Yet an unwillingness to court publicity prevented her from building on that momentum, leaving her with a devoted but limited following across North America and Europe. Born November 16, 1948, in Racine, Wisconsin, as one of seven children to a Canadian mother and a German violinist father, Chi—whose name is pronounced “shy”—took up several instruments early and performed her first piano recital at age twelve. By 1970 she had assembled Chicago Coltrane, a group that delivered blues, funk, and gospel material in neighborhood venues. Columbia Records offered her a contract in 1972 after hearing a six-song demo, and that same year the fully self-penned album Chi Coltrane reached stores. The single “Thunder and Lightning” climbed to number 17 by November. Critics praised the record, which lingered for three months in the lower half of the Billboard 200. In 1973 Coltrane enrolled at the Salter School of Music in Los Angeles and completed Let It Ride, another well-reviewed effort that nonetheless failed to attract buyers. She turned toward personal faith—intensely devoted to Bible study and the figure of Jesus while avoiding formal denominations—and stepped away from recording for several years. After issuing Road to Tomorrow in 1977, she relocated to Europe, signed with Teldec, and produced three albums in the 1980s whose new-wave, Euro-rock textures diverged from her earlier work. Following the final Teldec release, 1986’s The Message, her visibility diminished sharply. Apart from occasional film-music contributions in Germany and a 1991 project with Tangerine Dream, new activity remained scarce, although selections from her initial pair of albums surfaced on compact disc in the 1990s.
