Chris Newman, the British guitarist, composer, and arranger, converts the acoustic guitar into a vehicle for creative discovery. He belonged to the Boys of the Lough from 1994 to 1997 and still produces complex lines and energetic playing both as a solo performer and through his long-running partnership with Irish harper Maire Ni Chathasaigh, a collaboration that has included touring and recording since 1988.

Newman first picked up the guitar at the age of four and devoted his early attention to British folk music. Jazz drew his focus once he reached his teens. He performed with prominent jazz artists such as Stephane Grappelli, Diz Disley, and Denny Wright while also strengthening his abilities through extended work with numerous acoustic ensembles.

In 1985 his musical direction turned toward traditional Irish and Scottish music.
