Biography
Chris Norman stands out as a British soft rock vocalist whose international appeal stems from both his solo successes in the 1980s and his earlier accomplishments alongside Smokie throughout the 1970s. Several years after the 1978 duet with Suzi Quatro titled "Stumblin' In" gained traction, he left Smokie to pursue an independent path, reaching solo prominence via his sophomore release, Some Hearts Are Diamonds, issued in 1986. Over the ensuing decades Norman demonstrated remarkable productivity, issuing fresh studio material every two or three years while sustaining a devoted following in Germany that extended his chart presence well into the 2000s. A 2004 comeback brought further visibility there, highlighted by the Top Ten single "Amazing," after which he sustained a steady output of new recordings alongside retrospective sets such as 2009’s The Hits! From His Smokie and Solo Years and its accompanying live counterpart.
Born October 25, 1950, in Redcar, North Yorkshire, England, Norman launched his career as a member of Smokie. The group, originally formed in 1965, underwent multiple name changes before settling on Smokie during the mid-1970s. Alongside Norman on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, the lineup featured Alan Silson on lead guitar and vocals, Terry Uttley on bass and vocals, and Pete Spencer on drums. Smokie introduced themselves on record with the 1975 album Pass It Around. Their follow-up, Changing All the Time, also from 1975, propelled the band into mainstream pop recognition across the United Kingdom and portions of Western Europe, where the single "If You Think You Know How to Love Me" climbed to Top Ten status. Later efforts Midnight Cafe (1976), Bright Lights and Back Alleys (1977), and The Montreux Album (1978) likewise achieved widespread international success. That same year Norman secured an additional international Top Ten hit through his collaboration with Suzi Quatro on "Stumblin' In."
As Smokie’s popularity diminished near the decade’s close, Norman departed the group and debuted as a solo artist with Rock Away Your Teardrops in 1982. Although that initial effort met with limited response, his next album, Some Hearts Are Diamonds (1986), proved far more impactful by yielding the international Top Ten single "Midnight Lady." His strongest audience resided in Germany, where further late-’80s successes included "No Arms Can Ever Hold You," "Sarah (You Take My Breath Away)," and "Broken Heroes."
After maintaining a pattern of releases every couple of years from the mid-1980s forward, Norman experienced reduced visibility during the 1990s, yet regained chart traction after 2000, again most prominently in Germany. The year 2004 proved especially strong there, marked by the compilation The Very Best of Chris Norman, the studio album Break Away, and the Top Ten single "Amazing." Subsequent projects such as One Acoustic Evening (2005), Million Miles (2006), and Close Up (2007) found favor in the same market, while the career overview The Hits! From His Smokie and Solo Years (2009) registered success on a broader scale. During the tour supporting that collection, a 2009 Berlin performance was captured for the concert album and DVD The Hits! Tour: Live from Berlin, released later the same year.
Norman sustained studio activity into the following decade, once more delivering an album every couple of years beginning with Time Traveller in 2011. Later releases encompassed There and Back (2013), Crossover (2015), and Don't Knock the Rock (2017).
