Biography
After Journey paused its activities with a temporary split in 1987, Neal Schon on guitar and Jonathan Cain on keyboards joined forces with two musicians who had previously played alongside Cain in the Babys: lead vocalist John Waite and bassist Ricky Phillips. Together they assembled the band Bad English, with drummer Deen Castronovo, later a Journey member in the late '90s, filling out the rhythm section. Among the final supergroups to emerge before the decade ended, Bad English specialized in power ballads delivered with greater impact than most of their peers, owing much to the commanding presence of Waite's vocals and the template for the style that Schon had already established during his time in Journey. Crossing from the late '80s into the '90s, the group notched two major hit singles in "When I See You Smile" and "Price of Love" while their self-titled debut album, issued by Epic Records in 1989, attained platinum certification. The follow-up effort, however, carried the ironic title Backlash and lived up to it when the record met with widespread rejection, never placing any of its tracks inside the Top 40. The band dissolved shortly after that album appeared.
