Biography
Christian Grøvlen, a pianist whose early promise led to an established professional path, has also distinguished himself as a composer. Born in Bergen, Norway, on March 14, 1990, he began piano studies at a neighborhood music school when he was five. At thirteen he entered the youth talent program at the University of Bergen’s Grieg Academy, where he remained through 2009, supplementing his training with lessons from Jiri Hlinka. He enrolled at fifteen in the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, working with Håvard Gimse and Lars Anders Tomter, and in 2017 he continued his studies at the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music under Jens Elvekjær.
While still in his teens, Grøvlen accumulated major recognition, securing three first prizes at Oslo’s Youth Music Championship—once as soloist in 2005 and twice in 2007, both as soloist and chamber musician. At seventeen he performed a concerto with the Bergen Philharmonic. His first appearances at the University Aula in Oslo and the Bergen International Festival took place in May 2015, and the following year he received the Robert Levin Piano Prize in Oslo. He has appeared regularly at the Oslo Chamber Music Festival, the Winter Festival Games at Røros, and the Sunnmøre Chamber Music Festival. He also serves as director at KODE, the Norwegian network of art museums and composers’ homes.
Grøvlen joined the 2L label, issuing his debut album, BACH - Inside Polyphony, in 2017. In 2021 he returned with Eventyr, a program of atmospheric works by Grieg and several lesser-known Norwegian composers. He has devoted sustained effort to introducing the fine arts to younger audiences and to fostering wider public engagement with classical music.
