Biography
The Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, formally known in its native tongue as Det Norske Kammerorchester, traces its origins to a student group that evolved into an ensemble enjoying worldwide acclaim through extensive international touring. Over the years the group has collaborated with numerous distinguished soloists and visiting conductors.
Its foundation was laid in 1975 when violinist Bjarne Fiskum assembled a circle of student players in Oslo to give summer performances. Conductor Terje Tønnesen, recognizing Oslo’s demand for a compact orchestral body, officially founded the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra in 1977. He remained its sole music director from that point until stepping aside in summer 2021. Violinist Iona Brown held the post of co-artistic director from 1981 until 2001; violinist Isabelle van Keulen succeeded her beginning in 2009. Pianist Leif Ove Andsnes took up the role of principal guest conductor in 2002. Additional prominent visitors have included clarinetist Martin Fröst and cellist Steven Isserlis. Because membership adjusts according to each project, the ensemble can encompass many different instrumentalists while a stable nucleus preserves artistic cohesion. Although the University of Oslo has periodically served as its base, the orchestra has also appeared in other Norwegian venues and has undertaken repeated tours across Europe, Asia, and North America.
Recording activity commenced soon after the ensemble’s creation, with the group accompanying flutist Per Øien on the 1978 BIS release Virtuoso Flute Concerti of the Baroque. More than twenty-five further albums have followed on BIS, Lawo Classics, Simax, and additional labels, surveying repertory that stretches from Scandinavian scores through early-twentieth-century compositions to core Classical and Romantic works. In 2021 the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra partnered with violinist Pekka Kuusisto for a recording devoted to pieces by Nico Muhly and Philip Glass.
