Biography
The Danish National Symphony Orchestra, abbreviated DNSO, attained a stature worthy of its designation while fostering the worldwide trajectories of numerous leading conductors from Denmark and elsewhere. Long identified as the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra or Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the ensemble originated in the 1920s, although its trajectory intersects only partially with the history of radio transmission in Denmark.
A circle of musicians directed by vocalist Emil Holm created the DNSO in 1925. The initial roster of eleven players soon expanded to thirty and surpassed ninety by the late 1940s. Launy Grøndahl led the ensemble without holding any official title, and no principal conductor existed until Herbert Blomstedt assumed the post in 1967. Regular weekly concerts commenced in 1928 and relocated in 1931 to the Royal Danish Theatre. Artistic progress received notable impetus from Fritz Busch, who collaborated with Nikolai Malko across the late 1930s and the World War II era after his exile from Germany. Danish Radio conductor Mögens Wöldike frequently directed the symphony and oversaw multiple recordings with the group.
Blomstedt, an American of Swedish descent, numbered among the conductors whose careers advanced through association with the DNSO; he served as principal conductor from 1967 to 1977 and secured recognition for the orchestra via performances of Carl Nielsen symphonies. While the ensemble has concentrated on Danish repertoire, its programming has never been confined to that sphere. Blomstedt retains the designation of honorary conductor and maintains an active performing relationship. Subsequent leaders encompass Leif Segerstam (1988-1995), Thomas Dausgaard (2004-2011), and Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos (2012-2014). Fabio Luisi assumed the chief conductor position in 2017 and continued in that capacity into the early 2020s. The orchestra has also maintained a composer-in-residence, Søren Nils Eichberg.
Dausgaard and Luisi heightened the ensemble’s recorded profile through projects on the Dacapo and EuroArts labels, many featuring lesser-known Danish composers and often entrusted to guest conductors. In 2018 the DNSO joined the Danish National Concert Choir for a recording of Niels Gade’s large-scale yet seldom-performed cantata Comala (1846), led by Laurence Equilbey. The following year the orchestra entered the expanding domain of video game music with the album Gaming in Symphony. The group sustained its activities throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, issuing two albums in 2022: Luisi conducting Carl Nielsen’s Symphonies Nos. 4 and 5, and Jukka-Pekka Saraste directing Bent Sørensen: The Island in the City.
