Biography
The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra emerged among the earliest small orchestral groups to perform conductorless, and it continues to rank among the most critically esteemed ensembles of that kind. From the outset the players introduced many fresh compositions, extended their reach past conventional classical limits, and attracted leading international soloists to join them. Established in 1972 by musicians who embraced the era’s countercultural rejection of hierarchy, the orchestra counted cellist Julian Fifer among its founding members. Its roster typically numbers between twenty-five and thirty, with notably gradual turnover; by 2019 the ensemble listed only fourteen emeritus players, two of whom belonged to the original roster and had since passed away. Rehearsals unfold in successive phases: a rotating concertmaster works with a core group to shape an initial reading, after which the full ensemble adjusts details through collective refinement. The approach rests on an intensity of shared listening comparable to that of a string quartet. By the early 1980s the orchestra had secured a firm place in New York’s musical life, presenting ongoing series at Carnegie Hall and at Riverside Church. Once its programming shifted toward newer music, the group began appearing at forward-looking spaces such as Brooklyn’s ShapeShifter Lab. More than forty commissions have resulted from this emphasis. Star soloists including Yo-Yo Ma, Isaac Stern, and Martha Argerich have drawn audiences, while vocal projects have featured Renée Fleming, Dawn Upshaw, and Anne Sofie von Otter. International tours have taken the ensemble to Southeast Asia, where it became the first American orchestra to perform in Vietnam after the war’s conclusion and also conducted master classes in Hanoi. In 2019 the players appeared in a series at Bilbao’s Palacio Euskalduna. Recording activity began in the early 1970s on the economical Nonesuch imprint; a move to Deutsche Grammophon in 1985 yielded an album of Dvorak serenades. Although works by Fred Lerdahl and William Bolcom appear in the discography, most releases survey standard repertoire. The association with Deutsche Grammophon persisted into the late 2010s, culminating in the 2019 release Mendelssohn, recorded with pianist Jan Lisiecki.
