Biography
Although its administrative base is situated in London, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe earns its continental designation through a roster of roughly sixty musicians drawn from Britain and across the European mainland. By nurturing ties with numerous conductors and performance spaces, the ensemble stands out above all for a recording legacy that has drawn widespread praise and prestigious honors.
A cadre of young musicians who had outgrown the European Community Youth Orchestra established the group in 1981, seeking to sustain their collaborative music-making. Douglas Boyd numbered among the prime instigators and served for many years as principal oboist, while several other founding players have stayed with the orchestra throughout its existence. Forming a compact ensemble focused on Baroque and Classical repertoire was hardly novel at the time; rarer was the orchestra’s democratic governance, under which the players annually elect a compact directorate. Lacking a permanent music director, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe nevertheless attracted leading podium figures almost immediately. In 1983, only two years after its inception, Claudio Abbado selected the group for a Deutsche Grammophon recording of Rossini’s Il viaggio a Reims. Subsequent collaborations have included Bernard Haitink, Sakari Oramo, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, and additional conductors, together with distinguished soloists such as Janine Jansen, Emanuel Ax, and Renaud and Gautier Capuçon.
Consequently the orchestra travels throughout Europe and occasionally to North America without affiliation to any single city. These far-flung partnerships have yielded an exceptionally rich discography: from the late 1980s onward, several releases have appeared almost every year, with seven albums issued in 2006 alone. Between 2007 and 2013 the ensemble served as a cultural ambassador for the European Union. In 2009 it launched the COE Academy to offer training for emerging performers. Although much of the catalog centers on Baroque and Classical literature, especially Mozart, later projects encompass other styles; one example is the 2018 Deutsche Grammophon release Visions of Prokofiev. The orchestra’s extensive, critically lauded recordings have garnered two Grammy Awards and three Gramophone Record of the Year prizes. In 2020 a live account of Schubert’s symphonies recorded with Harnoncourt at the Styriarte festival in Graz, Austria, in 1988 was released. The following year the same partnership issued an album containing works by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, drawn from Styriarte performances spanning 1989 to 2007. The Chamber Orchestra of Europe operates as a nonprofit organization and a registered charity in Britain.
