Biography
Since its establishment in 1995 as the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, the Örebro-based group has risen to international stature under Thomas Dausgaard, who directed the fusion of the city's municipal players into a single ensemble. The musicians frequently present and document Romantic scores using roughly forty players, the scale for which such works were conceived. Their extensive discography appears chiefly on Sweden's BIS label, with a 2024 entry documenting hornist Alec Frank-Gemmill in Mozart's horn concertos.
Symphonic activity in Örebro reaches back to the opening decades of the nineteenth century, alternating between reduced and full-scale forces while drawing municipal support and, at times, military musicians alongside both professional and amateur performers. The present Swedish Chamber Orchestra, or Svenska Kammarorchestern, originated through the merger of the former Örebro Symphony Orchestra and Örebro Chamber Orchestra. Dausgaard assumed the post of first permanent conductor in 1997 and inaugurated a recording initiative that encompassed a complete Beethoven symphony cycle plus further orchestral repertoire on the Simax label, an ambitious endeavor for a regional Swedish ensemble.
Subsequent releases have appeared on Naxos, often spotlighting lesser-known Swedish orchestral music, and especially on BIS since around 2010. These projects have embraced early-nineteenth-century repertory such as Schubert symphonies, readily adaptable to chamber-orchestra dimensions, together with works by Bruckner and Wagner, including the Siegfried Idyll and the Wesendonck-Lieder featuring soprano Nina Stemme, and a 2018 account of Brahms's Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73, the Variations on a Theme by Haydn, Op. 56, and the Academic Festival Overture, Op. 80.
The orchestra undertakes regular tours and maintains a full concert season at the Örebro Concert Hall, with appearances at the BBC Proms, Lincoln Center in New York, and the Salzburg Festival. Dausgaard relinquished the principal post in 2019 while retaining the title of conductor laureate; clarinetist and conductor Martin Fröst succeeded him. The group's recording activity has continued uninterrupted, yielding multiple albums each year even amid the COVID-19 pandemic. BIS issued two 2024 recordings: one presenting pianist Paul Wee, led by Michael Collins, in concertos by Adolph von Henselt and Hans von Bronsart, and another featuring Alec Frank-Gemmill in Mozart's horn concertos under Nicholas McGegan.
