Biography
Lahti, Finland's ninth most populous city, is home to the internationally celebrated Lahti Symphony Orchestra, also known as Sinfonia Lahti. Under the direction of Osmo Vänskä and through an early recording agreement with BIS, the ensemble earned widespread praise for its interpretations of works by Baltic composers including Sibelius, Joonas Kokkonen, and Kalevi Aho. Beyond its concert, opera, and studio activities, the orchestra maintains an extensive schedule of educational programs designed for children and young audiences to encourage musical growth. In 2020, Dima Slobodeniouk led the ensemble in new recordings of music by Aho and Prokofiev.
Reorganized in 1949 from the ensemble long supported by the Lahti Friends of Music since 1910, the orchestra presents close to one hundred concerts each season, several of them staged in Helsinki. It appears regularly at Nordic events such as the Helsinki Festival, the Stockholm New Music Festival, and the Helsinki Biennale, which focuses on contemporary repertoire, and it has traveled widely across Europe, the United States, and Asia. In Lahti, performances take place at Sibelius Hall and at the Church of the Cross, the latter serving as the primary recording venue. Vänskä first worked with the orchestra as guest conductor between 1985 and 1988, then became chief conductor in 1988, remaining until 2008 and establishing himself among the foremost orchestral leaders of his generation. During this period the ensemble collected numerous international recording prizes.
Three times recipient of Gramophone Magazine's highest accolade, the orchestra was recognized for its accounts of the original versions of Sibelius' violin concerto and Symphony No. 5 together with En Saga, as well as the album Sibelius: Rondo of the Waves. In 1993 the Académie Charles Cros awarded it the Grand Prix for the complete recording of Sibelius' The Tempest. Additional honors include two Cannes Classical Awards, a MIDEM Classical Award, and the Diapason d'Or de l'Année. With the opening of Sibelius Hall in 2000, the orchestra launched its annual Sibelius Festival.
Further notable recording projects encompass the complete orchestral output of Kokkonen and continuing series devoted to Uuno Klami and Einojuhani Rautavaara. Kalevi Aho, after serving as composer-in-residence from 1992 to 2011, was named composer laureate in 2012. Following Vänskä's appointment as conductor laureate in 2008, Jukka-Pekka Saraste acted as artistic advisor from 2008 to 2011. Okko Kamu then held the chief conductor post from 2011 until 2016, when Dima Slobodeniouk assumed the role. Under Slobodeniouk the orchestra recorded Aho's Sieidi and Symphony No. 5 along with Prokofiev's Suites from The Gambler and The Tale of the Stone Flower in 2020. That same year Anja Bihlmaier was named the ensemble's first female principal guest conductor, and in 2021 Dalia Stasevska became its first female chief conductor.
