Biography
Since its founding in 1930, the BBC Symphony Orchestra has benefited from support provided by the British Broadcasting Company, freeing it from the monetary pressures that frequently beset independent ensembles. This backing has permitted programming that ventures further than most peer institutions, with emphasis placed on newer or seldom-heard works. Beyond its extensive commitments to BBC Radio 3 broadcasts, the orchestra delivers over 70 concerts annually before live audiences. Its dedication to contemporary music has secured the roughly 100-member group’s standing among Europe’s leading broadcast ensembles.
Plans for a BBC Orchestra originated in 1927, though formal establishment waited until Adrian Boult’s appointment as director of music in January 1930. The ensemble’s debut took place that October at Queen’s Hall, presenting music by Wagner, Brahms, and Ravel to strongly positive notices. Early seasons reflected a resolve to explore unfamiliar territory through pieces by Schoenberg, Bartók, and Alban Berg, several led by the composers. Boult required substantial inclusion of British composers, resulting in airings of works by Constant Lambert, Edward Elgar, and Ralph Vaughan Williams.
Administrative doubts about programming direction surfaced in 1935; friction between BBC management and the orchestra’s artistic leadership culminated in 1936 with the indignant resignation of Edward Clark, a central architect of the corporation’s musical approach. For the subsequent quarter-century the repertoire narrowed toward Romantic and post-Romantic scores, setting aside the earlier emphasis on newer music. Following Boult’s retirement in 1950, Sir Malcolm Sargent assumed the chief conductorship. His period saw the launch of the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts, first at Queen’s Hall and later at the Royal Albert Hall, together with the inauguration of the Royal Festival Hall, which became a regular venue. Rudolf Schwarz succeeded Sargent in 1957 and began restoring breadth to the programming.
During the 1960s the orchestra commissioned and introduced several works, among them pieces by Roberto Gerhard, aiming to raise its global profile. Budget limitations prevented full realization of those ambitions, yet Schwarz’s initiatives restored much of the ensemble’s earlier distinction. Antal Doráti took over as chief conductor in 1963 and arranged the first American tour in 1965. Sharing the podium with Pierre Boulez, Doráti chose adventurous programs centered on major contemporary composers; the tour’s success delivered the international recognition long sought. Boulez’s involvement proved decisive in returning the concert repertoire to its initial concentration on new music.
An illustrious sequence of internationally recognized conductors followed Boulez, among them Rudolf Kempe, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, and Leonard Slatkin. Sakari Oramo was appointed chief conductor in 2013 after appearing as a guest. In 2019 Dalia Stasevska became principal guest conductor, the first woman appointed to that role.
Although broadcasts and live performances constitute its primary activities, the BBC Symphony maintains a substantial recording catalogue issued on labels including NMC, Warner Classics, and Chandos. The last of these released Sibelius: Lemminkäinen Suite; Spring Song; Suite from Belshazzar’s Feast under Oramo in 2019. In 2022 several reissues and new recordings appeared, among them Oramo leading performances of Dora Pejačević’s music with Peter Donohoe as soloist in the Piano Concerto.
The BBC Symphony and the BBC Concert Orchestra are headquartered in London, while regional BBC orchestras reside in Manchester (BBC Philharmonic), Glasgow (BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra), and Cardiff (BBC National Orchestra of Wales).
