Biography
Even though much of his professional life unfolded behind the Iron Curtain in what was then Communist East Germany, conductor Kurt Masur earned widespread international esteem as one of the twentieth century’s foremost orchestral leaders. Long associated with Leipzig’s Gewandhaus Orchestra as its chief conductor and artistic director, he later guided the New York Philharmonic and the London Philharmonic, both of which benefited from his interpretive clarity. His extensive discography began reaching Western listeners well before German reunification, and fresh editions of earlier performances continued to surface long after his passing; Berlin Classics, for instance, released his 1971 account of Mendelssohn’s twelve Jugendsinfonien in 2023.
Masur entered the world on 18 July 1927 in Brieg, Lower Silesia—today Brzeg, Poland—where his father worked as an electrical engineer. Following an apprenticeship in that same trade, the young musician nevertheless pursued serious piano study with Katharina Hartmann and enrolled at the University of Breslau, now the University of Wrocław, adding cello to his training. During World War II he served as a paratrooper; of the 150 men in his unit, only twenty-seven survived. After the conflict he entered the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in Leipzig, yet left at twenty-one to take a post as répétiteur at the present-day Halle Opera House.
His early ascent followed the traditional Kapellmeister path: he led the Stadttheater Erfurt from 1951 to 1953, moved to the Leipzig Opera Theater for the next two seasons, and assumed the podium of the Dresden Philharmonic in 1955. Subsequent operatic engagements took him to the State Theater of Mecklenburg and the Komische Oper Berlin before he returned to Dresden from 1967 to 1972.
In 1970 Masur accepted the Gewandhauskapellmeister title in Leipzig, becoming both conductor and artistic head of an ensemble whose lineage extended back to its founder, Felix Mendelssohn. He remained in that post until 1991, producing numerous recordings with the orchestra, among them a 1974 Teldec edition of Mendelssohn’s cantata Die erste Walpurgisnacht, Op. 60. Although some projects circulated only within the Eastern Bloc, growing Western demand eventually permitted performances abroad; Masur appeared with the Cleveland Orchestra in 1974, led the Gewandhaus on a U.S. tour that same year, and made his New York Philharmonic debut in 1981. During the final months of the East German regime he also became known for his advocacy of human rights.
Succeeding Pierre Boulez and Zubin Mehta, Masur was appointed music director of the New York Philharmonic in 1991. Over the ensuing eleven seasons his emphasis on core German and Russian repertoire helped refine the ensemble’s collective sonority. That single year saw ten of his albums issued, many on Teldec, alternating between the Gewandhaus and New York forces. He later served the London Philharmonic from 2000 to 2007 and the Orchestre National de France from 2002 to 2008, maintaining an active guest-conducting calendar until Parkinson’s disease was diagnosed in 2012. Masur died in Greenwich, Connecticut, on 19 December 2015. His catalog ultimately encompassed roughly three hundred releases, Beethoven appearing most frequently alongside occasional departures such as a Gewandhaus performance of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue; reissues have continued steadily into the mid-2020s. In 2018 a Google Doodle commemorated the anniversary of his birth.
