Biography
Primarily recognized for directing operatic productions, Antonio Pappano broadened his engagements to encompass symphonic music toward the close of the 1990s. He has held the post of music director at London's Royal Opera at Covent Garden since 2002.
Born on December 30, 1959, in Epping, Essex, U.K., to parents who had immigrated from Italy, Pappano grew up in a household where his father worked as a chef while also performing as a tenor and offering private vocal instruction. Piano lessons began for the boy at age six, and within a few years he committed himself to pursuing the instrument professionally. The family relocated to Bridgeport, Connecticut, when he turned thirteen, enabling his father to accept a full-time teaching position in music. There Pappano continued studies under Norma Verrilli and supported himself through assorted employment that included playing piano in a cocktail lounge. He later took composition lessons with Arnold Franchetti and conducting lessons with Gustav Meier, although he harbored no intention at that stage of becoming a conductor himself. He first served as a rehearsal pianist at the New York City Opera and subsequently at the Frankfurt Opera. "The traditional route for conductors is via the piano, working with singers in the opera house. That's how it worked for me," he told the London Independent. Additional rehearsal work at the Lyric Opera of Chicago brought him to the notice of Daniel Barenboim, who engaged him as an assistant. In 1987 Pappano made his debut at the Norwegian Opera; by 1990 he had become its music director, and in 1992 he assumed the same title at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels. His first recording appeared in 1996, when he led the Orchestre Symphonique et Choeurs du Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Mendelssohn's Elijah.
A significant opportunity arose in 1993 when Pappano substituted for an indisposed Christoph von Dohnányi in a new production of Wagner's Siegfried at the Vienna State Opera. Subsequent guest engagements followed at theaters throughout Britain and the rest of Europe. Toward the end of the decade he began adding orchestral concerts to his schedule, appearing as guest conductor with the Israel Philharmonic from 1997 to 1999 and performing with the Chicago Symphony and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, among numerous other ensembles. In 2002 he was appointed music director of the Royal Opera Covent Garden, remaining in that role through 2024; Jakub Hrůša was named successor and assumed the position in 2025. Beginning in 2005 Pappano also became music director of the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, retaining the post into the early 2020s. His discography now exceeds eighty albums, focused chiefly though not solely on opera. For EMI Classics he has recorded numerous cornerstone works from the Italian operatic repertory, while he also approaches German and French opera with equal commitment and has explored a range of instrumental repertoire that includes a 2018 cycle of Leonard Bernstein's three symphonies with the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. In 2020 he conducted a new recording of Verdi's Otello featuring Jonas Kaufmann in the title role and again accompanied by the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. The same forces transferred to Warner Classics in 2022 for a recording of Rossini's Messa di Gloria and returned the following year with Puccini's Turandot starring Kaufmann.
