Biography
Among London's smaller orchestral groups, the London Mozart Players rank as one of the earliest established and hold a distinguished reputation. The ensemble focuses on Mozart alongside other Classical-era repertoire, employing modest-sized forces comparable to those of the period yet performing on contemporary instruments rather than period replicas.
Harry Blech, a conductor and string player, assembled the London Mozart Players in 1949 from the pool of musicians who had participated in his National Gallery Concerts staged inside the vacant museum throughout World War II. He directed the orchestra until 1984, at which point it stood as Britain's sole ensemble devoted to Classical-period music. Early popularity stemmed in part from Blech's commitment to bringing polished performances to smaller provincial centers that lacked such opportunities in the austere postwar era. In the capital, the group maintained a longstanding annual presence at the Royal Festival Hall. Its first digital release, issued by Chandos in 1983, presented symphonies by Muzio Clementi.
Since the late 1980s the London Mozart Players have served as the official resident ensemble of the Borough of Croydon, moving into the borough's Fairfield Halls in 2016. Jane Glover succeeded Blech in 1984, followed by Matthias Bamert in 1992, Andrew Parrott in 2000, Gérard Korsten in 2010, and Howard Shelley in 2014. The Earl of Wessex extends noble patronage, while the players themselves uniquely retain control of both financial and artistic decisions among Britain's professional orchestras. Domestic tours expanded into international itineraries, among them a 2018 journey that reached Dubai and Hong Kong. Prestigious soloists have regularly collaborated, ranging from flutist James Galway at the height of his career to Nicola Benedetti, Sheku Kanneh-Mason, and Thomas Trotter during the 2010s.
The orchestra has issued numerous recordings, chiefly with Chandos, frequently introducing works by seldom-heard figures such as Leopold Kozeluch and Adalbert Gyrowetz. Occasional projects extend beyond the Classical and early Romantic spheres, including a 2019 Signum Classics collaboration with the Colla Voce Singers on Roxanna Panufnik's Love Abide. In 2021 the London Mozart Players joined the Choir of Royal Holloway, University of London, to record Carson Cooman and Euan Tait's oratorio As We Are Changed for Hyperion. By 2023, when the ensemble returned to Chandos for the world-premiere recording of Hubert Parry's Scenes from Shelley's Prometheus Unbound, its discography exceeded fifty entries.
