Following the achievement of When I Was Born for the Seventh Time, Ben Ayres and Tjinder Singh of Cornershop stepped away from their primary group's duties to establish Clinton, a duo focused on political dance music. This endeavor's emphasis on beats and grooves became evident through the release of the single Buttoned Down Disco in 1999 and the first album Disco and the Halfway to Discontent in 2000 via Astralwerks.
