Biography
Born Marc Nguyen Tan in Paris, France, Nguyen Tan records under the name Colder. He launched his professional path as a television art director in the French capital, overseeing projects for Comme des Garçons, Kenzo and an array of other major brands. Unwilling to remain limited to graphic design and video production, he began developing Colder during off-hours. The first outcome appeared in April 2003 with the 7-inch single “Shiny Star,” a paranoid dub-influenced passage through the darker recesses of his mind. May brought the follow-up 12-inch “Crazy Love,” whose caustic sound reflected the imprint of UK post-punk stalwarts Joy Division while acknowledging contemporaries Death In Vegas. Issued on Trevor Jackson’s forward-looking Output Recordings label in the same manner as the preceding singles, the debut album Again traced an inspiring route into shadow, marked by defiant undercurrents, provocative drive and a sonic palette shaped by dub reggae, glitch-pop and Krautrock. Nguyen Tan further produced six short films to accompany the album, yielding an integrated audio-visual presentation that enhanced his stage performances.
