Biography
Warren Fischer, who possessed classical music training, joined forces with video artist and experimental theater performer Casey Spooner to launch the electro-pop duo Fischerspooner in New York City during 1998. The project later expanded beyond its core pair to encompass more than 20 members at its peak, primarily dancers alongside guest vocalists such as Cindy Greene, Lizzy Yoder of Sweet Thunder, and Korean pop recording artist Mona Trona. Fischerspooner blended vocoders with electronics inspired by Giorgio Moroder while folding in multimedia elements, handmade costumes, dance, and performance art. Their self-titled 2000 debut generated a genuine sensation throughout downtown New York City galleries and clubs. Single “Emerge” reached the top of European charts, prompted a six-song remix EP, and secured Fischer and Spooner entry to international fashion, art, and society events. The 2002 album #1 reimagined the debut material, presenting a fresh, more restrained electro version of “Emerge” that reflected prevailing trends. In 2005 the duo issued their second album Odyssey on which hitmaker Linda Perry, intellectual Susan Sontag, and Madonna producer Mirwais each contributed.
After the release Fischerspooner completed a European tour yet could not finance the transport of their elaborate production to North America. Three years afterward they returned via the Kitsune single “The Best Revenge,” the opening track of their 2009 album Entertainment. Issued on the group’s own FS label and produced by Jeff Saltzman, the record included a collaboration with Ann Magnuson. Fischerspooner remained largely inactive throughout most of the 2010s. Spooner rejoined Saltzman for his 2011 solo debut Adult Contemporary, co-directed the 2012 film Dust, and collaborated with experimental theater ensemble the Wooster Group on additional endeavors. Fischer, meanwhile, directed commercials, served as music supervisor, and produced films. The pair reconvened later in the decade, unveiling the 2017 single “Have Fun Tonight” as the initial preview of their fourth album, Sir, which arrived in 2018. An emotional, hedonistic collection addressing gay life during the 2010s, Sir was produced by Michael Stipe and Boots and featured contributions from Holly Miranda and Chairlift’s Caroline Polachek.
