Biography
Miss Kittin, often shortened to Kittin, ranks among electroclash's defining personalities, moving with equal skill between DJ sets, vocal performances, and studio production. Her signature flat delivery and sharply ironic words, frequently aimed at fame and style, appeared on several dancefloor successes near the turn of the century, among them Felix da Housecat's "Silver Screen Shower Scene" and "Frank Sinatra," one of her earliest tracks with longtime partner the Hacker. Two albums arrived in 2001 at the height of the electroclash wave—Or with Golden Boy and First Album with the Hacker—before her first solo statement, I Com, arrived in 2004 and moved into dub, ambient, and downtempo areas. Later releases include the 2013 album Calling from the Stars and the more experimental Cosmos in 2018, along with further full-lengths alongside the Hacker and collaborations with ANNA, Marc Houle, Dubfire, and additional artists; she also issued roughly a dozen DJ mixes, among them the 2023 volume in Kompakt's Connecting the Dots series.
Caroline Hervé first developed an interest in music through her parents' record collections, which ranged across disco, funk, classical, and jazz. The Grenoble, France native was drawn to the early-'90s rave scene and began delivering her own DJ sets within three years of entering that world. A significant early opportunity arrived with bookings for the Dragon Ball events in Southern France. In 1996 she relocated to Geneva, Switzerland and aligned herself with the Mental Groove Records group. Three initial productions surfaced on various-artists compilations scattered across 1996 and 1997.
By 1998 she had joined the International Deejay Gigolos roster as part of a duo with the Hacker, debuting on the label with the Champagne! EP and following it in 1999 with Intimités. First Album appeared in 2000, pairing club-oriented production with new wave sensibilities. The pair's sardonic "Frank Sinatra," originally included on their debut EP, resonated with the growing electroclash audience, while Kittin's monotone vocals also energized Felix da Housecat's 2001 single "Silver Screen Shower Scene" and Golden Boy's Or LP the same year. With her profile established, she issued the techno-oriented On the Road, showcasing her DJ abilities. Radio Caroline in 2002 pursued a similar path, pulling Miss Kittin away from any electroclash label and back to her primary focus on mixing.
Between two further studio albums—2004's NovaMute-issued I Com and 2008's goth-leaning Batbox, the first release on her Nobody's Bizzness imprint—she put out another pair of mixes: Live at Sonar and A Bugged Out Mix. A second collaborative album with the Hacker, titled Two, arrived in 2009. The 23-track solo set Calling from the Stars followed in 2013 and contained a cover of R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts." That LP was directly followed by the Marc Houle collaboration "Where Is Kittin?," with further releases alongside Nicolas Masseyeff and Guy Gerber appearing in 2015. Dark Entries also issued the vinyl EP Lost Tracks, Vol. 1 with the Hacker, with Lost Tracks, Vol. 2 arriving in 2018; the same label released Cosmos, an ambient techno full-length credited solely to Kittin, the artist's original and preferred name.
Kittin teamed with Brazilian producer ANNA for the defiant single "Forever Ravers," released by Kompakt in 2019. She appeared on Hot Since 82's 2021 track "Naboo" and "Open the Doors" by FJAAK and Tobi Neumann. David Guetta issued a rework of "Silver Screen Shower Scene" in 2022. Kittin & the Hacker's Third Album also surfaced that year, and Kittin featured on another Masseyeff track, "Present." She surveyed the Kompakt catalog via the 2023 mix Connecting the Dots.
