Michael Mayer stands out among the pivotal personalities shaping the electronic music landscape in Cologne, Germany. Renowned for his work behind the decks, in the studio, and as a remixer, he has put out a series of acclaimed compilation albums—including the timeless 2002 release Immer—along with various singles and a select number of original LPs. The bulk of his output has appeared via Kompakt, the storied techno imprint and distribution network he co-manages alongside founder Wolfgang Voigt, as well as its affiliated outlets such as New Trance Atlantic (NTA) and Kreisel 99. Whether exploring house or techno territories, his own recordings typically employ sparse arrangements accented by dub elements, each one distinct from the last.

Born in Germany’s Black Forest region during 1971, Mayer relocated to Cologne at age twenty. There he joined the staff at record shop Delirium alongside Wolfgang Voigt, Reinhard Voigt, Jörg Burger, and Jürgen Paape. Together this collective played a foundational role in developing the local techno community by launching multiple imprints and hosting regular club events. His initial pair of twelve-inch releases came out on NTA back in 1997, preceding the 1998 launch of Kompakt itself, which merged various labels, the store, and event operations. That same year Neuhouse put out the mix collection Kompakt Köln Präsentiert Michael Mayer, drawing from artists including Sanasol, Herbert, OM1, and the Modernist.

Four years afterward Kompakt presented Immer, a further DJ mix that mapped the evolution of microhouse and tech-house since his earlier effort, incorporating selections from Carsten Jost, Akufen, Selway, and A Rocket in Dub while demonstrating exceptional skill in track choice and flow. By then Mayer had emerged as a prominent representative of Cologne’s techno sound. He issued two mix projects in 2003: an entry in the Speicher twelve-inch series and a livelier, tuneful set for London’s Fabric imprint. The next year brought another Speicher mix plus the long-awaited first album of his own material, Touch.

While maintaining his involvement with Kompakt operations over the ensuing period he assembled Immer 2 and Immer 3 plus additional roundups of Speicher material. He also teamed with Superpitcher under the SuperMayer moniker for a 2007 Kompakt album. In parallel with worldwide DJ engagements and label duties he handled remixes for clients such as Moby, Pet Shop Boys, and Depeche Mode. His next solo album Mantasy finally surfaced in October 2012. After another stretch focused elsewhere, a 2015 split twelve-inch with Reinhard Voigt appeared, followed in 2016 by a joint twelve-inch with Kölsch on IPSO. Later that year !K7 issued &, his third studio album, which included joint tracks with Miss Kittin, Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard, Gui Boratto, and additional contributors. His edition of the !K7 DJ-Kicks series came out in 2017.

The standalone Speicher single “See You” surfaced in 2018, after which Mayer turned to extended plays such as 2020’s Higher and 2021’s Brainwave Technology. He also handled a volume in Kompakt’s Connecting the Dots retrospective series. Speicher 125, created with Barnt, arrived in 2023. His first album in eight years, The Floor Is Lava, reached stores via Kompakt in 2024; drawing from the playful spirit of early house records, the artist characterized it as “a DJ album by a DJ that’s easily bored.”
