Peter M. Kersten operates chiefly under the alias Lawrence as a German creator of downcast techno and ambient house, while also recording as Sten. Once a gardener by trade, he has issued numerous albums and singles through outlets such as Mule Musiq, Kompakt, and Dial—the Hamburg imprint he established alongside Carsten Jost and Turner. Like many peers of his era, Lawrence often blurred the line separating rhythmic elements from textural ones, yet over time he adopted a more streamlined approach supported by an expanded range of instrumentation. Although echoes of Larry Heard and Theo Parrish surface in his work, the producer sustained a singular atmosphere and character that aligned with the monochrome visual aesthetic commonly paired with his output. Early recognition arrived via evocative, atmospheric techno long-players such as 2003’s The Absence of Blight, after which he maintained a steady flow of full-lengths that spanned beat-oriented efforts like 2016’s Yoyogi Park and weightless excursions like 2021’s Birds on the Playground and the Music for Plants series.

Lawrence made his Dial debut with 2000’s Sporturlaub, followed by a 2001 appearance on Kompakt via Teaser; his first album-length statement, the self-titled Lawrence, arrived in 2002 on a co-release between Dial and Ladomat 2000. The Absence of Blight surfaced the next year, while Ghostly International handled 2004’s Spark EP. Wider reach came for 2005’s The Night Will Last Forever through a joint arrangement with NovaMute. Lowlights from the Past and Future, issued by Mule Electronic in 2006, assembled highlights from an extensive catalog of 12-inch releases and remixes. The same imprint later released the 2009 album Until Then, Goodbye.

Throughout the ensuing decade Lawrence sustained ties to prior partners and added affiliations with Dial sublabel Laid, DJ Koze’s Pampa, and Hamburg’s Smallville. Cocoon released his 2011 mix CD Timeless. Further studio albums arrived in the form of 2013’s Films & Windows on Dial, 2014’s ambient-leaning A Day in the Life via Mule Musiq, and 2016’s Yoyogi Park, also on Mule Musiq. Illusion appeared on Dial in 2018, while the EPs Moonlight on Giegling and Black Cats on Mule Musiq both emerged in 2019. The two-part ambient project Music for Plants received digital release in 2020. In 2021, Birds on the Playground—incorporating improvisations and field recordings—joined The City of Tomorrow EP. Music for Plants (III & IV) and the EP Birds on the Dancefloor followed in 2022.
