Originating from Missouri, Lawrence Rothman now calls Los Angeles home while working as both a musician and visual artist. He first began composing songs and capturing them in a home studio once he reached the age of nine. Around the same period he also took to donning costumes that embodied alternate personas, or “alters,” each tailored to the project at hand—a habit that later became a hallmark of his promotional visuals and live shows. Over time he developed a distinctive, ripe baritone whose first appearance on record came with the 2013 single “Montauk Fling,” issued by Mamaroma. The label followed with additional tracks such as “Kevin” and “#1 All Time Low” prior to Rothman’s 2015 signing with Downtown Records/Interscope. Later that year the plaintive single “California Paranoia,” which featured Angel Olsen, appeared as one installment in a series of previews drawn from his debut full-length, The Book of Law, which surfaced in fall 2017. The album channeled personal battles with gender identity and social alienation via a blend of piano balladry and lite synth pop; Justin Raisen, known for work with Charli XCX and Santigold, produced alongside Rothman’s brother Yves. Guests included Marissa Nadler and Kristin Kontrol, while session support came from Pino Palladino (the Who, John Mayer Trio), Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses), and Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint).
