Biography
Manfredi Romano, known professionally as DJ Tennis, crafts and performs atmospheric, introspective electronic pieces that span indie-leaning house and meticulously layered techno. A string of favorably received singles on Kompakt and his own Life and Death label preceded the ambitious double-CD installment he delivered for the DJ-Kicks series in 2017. Festival appearances have been frequent, and he has sustained a flow of singles and EPs, among them Repeater in 2022.
Romano began by creating punk and indie rock in the late 1980s while also hosting a college radio program. He later turned to staging electronic and experimental events and helped establish the DAZE booking agency. In 2010 he redirected his attention to DJing and production, launching the Life and Death label together with Greg Oreck. His initial release on the imprint was the 2012 single “Make It Good.” Kompakt followed later that year with “The Outcast,” a collaboration featuring Pillowtalk. The double EP Local appeared on Life and Death in 2014, succeeded by Divisions Chirality in 2016 and joint singles with Martin Buttrich. For the 2017 DJ-Kicks edition, Tennis assembled the series’ first double-CD set, devoting the opening disc to IDM and abstract techno while shaping the second around more club-focused yet still atmospheric selections. Certain Angles, a joint project with Fink, arrived after the mix.
Running Back released the Gordon Starck EP in 2019. Further singles emerged over the following years, including “Intercooler” in 2020 and “Atlanta” in 2021. He worked with LP Giobbi and Joseph Ashworth on 2022’s “All in a Dream” and issued “On My Own Now” alongside Ashee featuring Lady Donli. Repeater, accompanied by a DJ Seinfeld remix, came out on Aus Music, and Tennis joined Carlita and Alex Metric for the track “Cinecittà.”
